Adaptive Reuse Strategies for Historic Masonry Enclosures
This program will examine the complexities of adaptive reuse projects with regards to building enclosures, where historic constructions must accommodate today’s occupancies and integrate with modern building systems and enclosure performance requirements. Historic construction types and assemblies must be understood prior to planning and executing a successful reuse project; as such, pre-design assessments and understanding of distress mechanisms are vital. Using multiple case study examples, we will examine technical considerations common to adaptive reuse projects, such as performance of masonry mass walls, remediation of existing distress and material choices. The course will include a focus on how regionality affects masonry reuse projects, including climate, product selection, etc.

- Recognize the importance of existing conditions assessment prior to undertaking a reuse project.

- Evaluate the compatibility of modern and historic systems, and the importance of detailing critical transitions between new and old.

SPEAKER & BIO: Mallory Buckley, PE, RRO, BECxP + CxA+BE
Mallory Buckley, P.E., RRO, BECxP + CxA+BE, is a Senior Associate and Project Manager in Walter P Moore’s Diagnostics Group, based in Dallas, TX. She specializes in building enclosure consulting and diagnostics, with expertise in roofing and waterproofing systems, façade restoration, façade access and maintenance strategies, and building enclosure commissioning. Mallory’s portfolio includes highly visible projects such as San Diego International Airport, NRG Stadium, and the Jacksonville Jaguars’ new stadium, as well as university, healthcare, and commercial facilities nationwide.
She is a licensed Professional Engineer in Texas, Oklahoma, and Louisiana, and holds credentials as a Registered Roof Observer, Building Enclosure Commissioning Authority, and Commissioning Process Provider. An award-winning speaker, Mallory is a frequent presenter at national and international conferences and was recently recognized by Building Design + Construction as a member of its 40 Under 40 Class of 2025.
Mallory is also an active industry leader, serving on the board of the IIBEC North Texas Chapter and supporting emerging professionals through mentorship, publications, and national initiatives. Passionate about education, she is a Higher Education Market Sector Leader at Walter P Moore and serves on the Women’s Advisory Board for the College of Engineering at Oklahoma State University.
Outside of work, Mallory is deeply involved in the Dallas Junior League and other community initiatives. She enjoys painting, travel, and sharing culinary experiences, blending her creativity and technical expertise in both professional and personal spheres.
