Detailing Air Barriers

PROGRAM DESCRIPTION:

This course provides an overview of the specific techniques for installing various types of air barrier materials. Air barriers are required by code in most states. While most architects understand the rationale, they are unclear about the installation details. This important layer of the building envelope requires careful detailing and installation. Some firms even require meetings with installation contractors to ensure that details are correctly executed. This course covers complex details, including rough openings, roof-to-wall transitions, and joints between different building materials. This program is registered with the AIA/CES for continuing professional education and is HSW-approved.

LEARNING OBJECTIVES

Review air barrier systems and why they are important to a building’s energy savings
Identify difficult air barrier details in various types of building envelope construction
Discuss installation and applications of liquid and membrane air barriers around rough openings, corners, building joints, and junctions of different materials
Illustrate methods that save time or improve application and installation

SPEAKER BIO:

Nick Tam is an Architectural Representative for W. R. Meadows, a Division 03 and 07 product manufacturer. He started with W. R. Meadows in June of 2017 as an Inside Sales Representative before moving to Outside Sales in April of 2019. After 2 years in Houston visiting construction sites and being a technical resource for W. R. Meadows various product offerings, he transitioned to Architectural Representation with an emphasis on design and proper product selection. To this day, Nick Tam works closely with Architects, Engineers, Consultants, Contractors, and Owners to help improve the project delivery process.
