This presentation will cover an introduction to bitumen and modified bitumen roof systems. We will discuss a brief history of ancient and modern bitumen systems and go over the physical characteristics, limitations, and challenges.
- Modified Bitumen Roof Background - Gain a basic concept of the natural state of bituminous material.
- Modified Bitumen Roof Systems - Formation and design up to the modern era.
- Modified Bitumen Roof Process - Understanding the general building blocks of how bitumen is modified from the original product and transformed into usable basic materials and high performance modern roof membranes, mastics and emulsions.
- Modern Modified Bitumen Roof System Challenges in the 21st Century - Increase awareness of modified bitumen roof system issues that can lead to premature failure (cracking, granule loss and lap failure).
Speaker: Bruce A. Hall
Speaker Bio: Bruce A. Hall is a Senior Facilities Professional with Terracon Consultants, Dallas, Texas. Mr. Hall is a Registered Building Enclosure Consultant (RBEC) through the International Institute of Building Enclosure Consultants (IIBEC), which includes: Registered Roof Consultant (RRC), Registered Waterproofing Consultant (RWC), and Registered Exterior Wall Consultant (REWC). Mr. Hall is a Construction Document Technologist (CDT) through the Construction Specifications Institute (CSI). Mr. Hall earned a degree in architecture from Texas A&M University and a master’s degree in archaeology (Thesis: Ancient Architecture) from Southwestern Seminary. He is currently a PhD (ABD) candidate. He is a published author, archaeologist, educator and is a Certified IIBEC Instructor. As an educator, he has conducted numerous building enclosure seminars for IIBEC, AIA, university personnel, property managers, military base personnel, architects, engineers, corporations, contractors and independent school districts. Mr. Hall has provided historic building enclosure consulting to over 30 building owners who have structures on United States - National Register of Historic Places list. He has extensive experience with a variety of historic buildings such as the Alamo, San Antonio, Texas and the Governor’s Mansion in Austin, Texas.
Mr. Hall has served clients as a Building Enclosure Consultant for more than 34 years. Mr. Hall’s experience includes assessment, litigation support, forensic investigation, analysis, renovation design, peer review and construction monitoring/administration. He established himself as a leader within the building enclosure consulting industry while serving as Founder, Vice President, and President of the Gulf Coast Roof Management Institute, which later became the Gulf Coast Chapter of IIBEC (IIBEC-GC Houston, TX). Mr. Hall currently serves IIBEC nationally as a member of the Ethics Committee. Mr. Hall is an active member of IIBEC and AIA.
