Consultants and Consequences "Where Building Science Education Meets Experience"

Every building has its secrets. Some of those secrets are harmless, but some affect the integrity of the life cycle and could create life safety hazards. This presentation dives into where a building enclosure consultant and/or engineer fits into the cycle and what are the consequences when bringing that role on board.

    LEARNING OBJECTIVES

      1. Understand the role of a building enclosure consultant/engineering

      2. Learn the difference between new construction enclosure consulting, existing buildings & forensics (in a perfect world, when problems occur, when “stuff” turns ugly)
      3. Discuss your clients’ pain points in building design, construction and/or occupancy
      4. Review Case studies & financial impacts

Building Science Thermography - Level 1 Certification Course

The North Texas Chapter is pleased to provide this Level 1 Certification Course for Building Science Infrared Thermography! NOTE: VENUE HAS BEEN CHANGED

This four day intensive course is designed to enable both new infrared camera users and practicing thermographers to become competent in the use of infrared thermography in commercial and residential building investigations. Participants who successfully complete the course, the required coursework/projects, and pass the exam will be provided a certificate for Level 1 Building Science Thermography.

This course includes lectures, instructor/group demonstrations, and hands on practice lessons. No previous infrared thermography experience is necessary. Some knowledge of basic building construction is helpful, but not required. It is recommended that students bring their own thermal imager for familiarity. Infrared cameras will not be provided.

Individuals completing the requirements for SWA Consulting’s Level I Building Science Thermography are considered competent as Building Science Thermographers, qualified to perform building thermographic analysis and basic infrared thermography as relevant to an advanced Level I Thermographer.

The completion of this course will serve to provide the student a clear understanding of thermal and building sciences and theuse of infrared thermography for investigating heat flow, air flow and moisture within buildings.

The course will be taught by Scott Wood. Scott, the president of Scott Wood Associates, LLC, is an expert in Investigations of and training in building science and infrared thermography for pre and post-design, construction, air barrier, condition monitoring, restoration, and water intrusion. Scott has performed investigations on hundreds of buildings, discovering defects as well as providing corrective recommendations to prevent heat loss, air infiltration, and moisture intrusion. In addition, Scott Wood Associates, LLC has provided the expertise in developing and providing training in building science thermography through cooperation between the Building Science Institute and the Infrared Training Center since 2003.

Additional information is included in the attached PDF links below.

      Please note the following:

      1. Attendance on all four days is mandatory.
      2. Attendees need to bring their own cameras or share a camera with a fellow attendee.
      3. Lunch will be provided each day.
      4. Last day to sign up is July 7th!

      Wind Design for Roofs

Wind design of roof systems can be complicated. Let’s face it—there’s math involved! The latest version of ASCE 7 has only added complexity to the design process. This presentation focuses on:

      • Understanding the design process outlined in ASCE 7-16.

      • Exploring the similarities and differences among three ASCE 7 versions:

        • ASCE 7-05

        • ASCE 7-10

        • ASCE 7-16

      • How updates to ASCE 7-16 affect wind design methods.

      • Updates to FM’s wind design process and requirements in FM Global Loss Prevention Data Sheets (e.g., LPDS 1-28 and 1-29).

      LEARNING OBJECTIVES

        1. Describe the similarities and differences between the three versions of ASCE 7 and the roofing industry-developed methods used to determine loads.
        2. Identify the foundational elements involved in determining wind loads acting on a building.
        3. Differentiate between the load side and the resistance side and understand how each is presented in the roofing industry.
        4. Explain the recent changes and the impact of the new information contained in FM’s Loss Prevention Data Sheets 1-28 and 1-29.
