Mitigating risk from adverse conditions such as wind, fire, hail and moisture.

LEARNING OBJECTIVES:

Describe certain regional design idiosyncrasies required in North America that mitigate risk from adverse conditions such as wind, sound, hail, impact and fire.
Identify test methods and standards commonly used to evaluate commercial roofing resistance systems against adverse conditions.
Accurately define and reference the correct manufacturing and product standard in specifications that will ensure optimum performance of the commercial roofing system.
Review FM Very Severe Hail requirements and current methodologies approved to mitigate those risks.

SPEAKER BIO:

Glenn Miller has been with Georgia-Pacific (formerly Temple-Inland) for over 40 years and in that time has been involved in full-line sales/marketing, product development, architectural marketing, commercial roofing and total building envelope science and marketing. His areas of specialization include Single-Ply and roofing system membrane technical sales, Sustainable Design and Construction, LEED®, construction documents, fire and sound assembly design and code/regulatory issues. Miller is passionate about providing value solutions to the design and construction industry and is excited to be a part of a company that has embraced and led the way in these ideals for decades. Miller sat on the ASTM E60 Committee for Sustainability, the Education Committee of the USGBC Texas chapter and is actively involved in CSI, IIBEC and RCA chapters throughout Texas, Oklahoma, Kansas, and Missouri. He is the 2019 recipient of Georgia-Pacific’s Pat Huempfner Award for Outstanding Sales Leadership. Outside of professional circles. Miller and his wife Sharon enjoy being the grandparents of 6 little ones. National Medal of Honor Museum: Building Enclosure Challenges and Solutions

PROGRAM DESCRIPTION:

The National Medal of Honor Museum in Arlington, Texas represents one of the most distinctive building enclosure projects completed in recent years. Designed by Rafael Viñoly Architects and opened in March 2025, the 102,000-square-foot museum is defined by a 200-foot by 200-foot exhibition hall that appears to float approximately 40 feet above the ground, supported by only five massive concrete megacolumns. While the architecture creates a powerful symbolic expression honoring Medal of Honor recipients, it also presented extraordinary building enclosure design and commissioning challenges.

This panelist discussion examines how the project team addressed the unique performance demands of an elevated structure in North Texas's mixed-humid climate. Topics include the design and commissioning of the museum's high-performance enclosure systems, with emphasis on air barrier continuity, water management, thermal performance, movement accommodation, and long-term durability. Particular attention will be given to the complex interfaces between the suspended structure, megacolumn penetrations, roof systems, curtain wall assemblies, metal panel cladding, and below-grade waterproofing.

The session will also highlight the Building Enclosure Commissioning (BECx) process performed throughout design, construction, and project closeout. Discussion will include performance mock-up testing, ASTM field testing for air and water infiltration, coordination of roofing and waterproofing systems, vapor control strategies, and quality assurance measures used to verify enclosure performance. Lessons learned from coordinating complex geometries, multiple trades, and prefabricated enclosure components during an accelerated construction schedule will be shared.

Attendees will gain practical insight into enclosure solutions applicable to museums, healthcare facilities, civic buildings, and other architecturally significant projects where long-term durability, resiliency, and performance are critical. The presentation emphasizes real-world commissioning experiences and best practices that can be applied to future high-performance building enclosure projects.

Identify the unique building enclosure challenges associated with elevated and architecturally complex structures, including continuity of the air, water, thermal, and vapor control layers.
Evaluate how Building Enclosure Commissioning (BECx), performance mock-up testing, and ASTM field testing contribute to achieving long-term enclosure performance and risk mitigation.
Describe best practices for coordinating roofing, waterproofing, curtain wall, metal panel, and below-grade systems across complex building interfaces and multiple trades.

SPEAKER BIOS:

Billy Jones, RRC, RWC, RRO is a Principal at Curtainwall Design Consulting (CDC), where he helps lead the Building Enclosure Consulting Practice. With more than 18 years of building enclosure consulting experience, he specializes in roofing and waterproofing design, building enclosure commissioning (BECx), forensic investigations, quality assurance, and performance testing for complex projects. Billy has worked on healthcare, civic, higher education, hospitality, commercial, and mixed-use facilities, helping project teams deliver durable, high-performance building enclosure solutions.

Dickson Fogleman, AIA, LEED AP, BECxP is an Associate and Senior Enclosure Consultant at Curtainwall Design Consulting (CDC), where he manages the New Construction Consulting practice for the Texas market. With more than 15 years of building enclosure consulting experience, he specializes in unitized and site-fabricated façade systems, building enclosure commissioning (BECx), forensic investigations, quality assurance, and performance testing for complex projects. Dickson has consulted to owners and architects on museum, healthcare, civic, higher education, hospitality, commercial, and mixed-use facilities, helping project teams deliver durable, high-performance building enclosure solutions.

Chris Evans is the Vice President of Estimating at KPost Roofing & Waterproofing, where he oversees all project design and cost control initiatives. With more than 20 years of extensive experience in commercial roofing, including consulting, contracting, and manufacturer representation. Chris is a member of the KPost Executive Team and played a key role in overseeing the technical execution of the National Medal of Honor Project.

Jacob Douenias, AIA, NCARB, served as Project Manager for the National Medal of Honor Museum in Arlington, Texas, relocating from New York to the project site to oversee construction administration through its completion in March 2025. He coordinated closely with the client, contractor, consultants, and fabricators to execute the Museum’s complex building enclosure and resolve design, performance, sequencing, and constructability challenges.

Jacob is a Senior Project Manager at Rafael Viñoly Architects, where he has worked for 11 years. With 13 years of professional experience, he has contributed to complex cultural, institutional, athletic, and residential projects across all phases of design, from programming and conceptual design through construction administration. His work focuses on technical coordination, construction documentation, regulatory approvals, and project delivery.

See What Others Miss: Aerial Intelligence and Multi-Sensor Inspection for the Building Envelope

Building enclosure professionals are increasingly called upon to assess facades, roofs, and building systems that are difficult, dangerous, or time-consuming to inspect through conventional means. Little Bird AI deploys FAA-certified drone platforms and multi-sensor payloads, including high-resolution visible-light cameras, radiometric thermal infrared sensors, and LiDAR, to deliver actionable intelligence that traditional inspection methods simply cannot match.

This session introduces roofing and building envelope consultants to the capabilities of high-tech aerial inspection technology: what it can detect, how the data is processed and delivered, and how it integrates into existing assessment and reporting workflows. Real-world case studies from Texas projects, including a large university student housing complex and a university center roof assessment, will demonstrate practical applications in facade condition assessment, moisture intrusion detection, storm damage documentation, and construction progress monitoring. Attendees will leave with a clear understanding of when and how to deploy aerial intelligence on their own projects.

Objective 1: Identify Core Inspection Services

Participants will be able to distinguish between facade inspections, thermal infrared surveys, construction monitoring, and industrial/high-risk inspections, and match each service type to appropriate project scenarios such as pre-purchase assessments, post-storm damage documentation, or moisture intrusion investigation.

Objective 2: Describe Sensor Technology & Deliverables

Participants will understand the role of radiometric thermal cameras, high-resolution RGB sensors, photogrammetry, and 3D modeling in generating orthomosaic imagery, annotated deficiency reports, interactive models, and other client-ready outputs, and how these deliverables support professional decision-making.

Objective 3: Evaluate Regulatory & Credentialing Standards

Participants will be able to identify key professional standards relevant to sUAS operations, including FAA Part 107 certification, certified sUAS thermographer credentials, and insurance requirements — and apply this knowledge when vetting aerial inspection providers or incorporating drone data into their own scopes of work.

Objective 4: Apply Lessons from Real-World Case Studies

Drawing on documented projects including a Texas A&M University student housing complex facade and thermal roof assessment and a university center rooftop IR survey, participants will identify project conditions, constraints (such as restricted airspace), and deliverable types that make aerial inspection an appropriate tool in the building consultant's toolkit.
