European Construction Technology vs. US Construction Technology

PROGRAM DESCRIPTION: Construction methods in Europe and the United States have evolved under different regulatory environments, material availability, labor practices, and performance expectations. These differences have produced distinct approaches to building envelope design, roofing systems, waterproofing strategies, and long-term durability. This presentation explores key contrasts between European and U.S. construction technologies, with a focus on roofing and building envelope systems. Attendees will learn how European construction practices often emphasize long-term durability, integrated system design, and prefabrication, while U.S. construction frequently prioritizes speed, cost efficiency, and trade specialization. Through case studies and product examples, the session will examine the performance implications of these approaches and highlight technologies currently gaining traction in North America. Participants will gain insights into how European innovations—such as fully integrated roofing systems, advanced membrane technologies, and factory-controlled fabrication—may influence the future of construction in the United States.

LEARNING OBJECTIVES:

Identify key differences between European and U.S. construction practices, including material selection, installation methods, and regulatory drivers.
Understand how European building envelope technologies emphasize durability, long-term performance, and integrated system design.
Evaluate emerging roofing and waterproofing technologies that are transitioning from European markets into North American construction.

SPEAKER BIO:

Jason Stanley is the Chief Executive Officer of IB Roof Systems, a manufacturer specializing in PVC roofing membranes for flat and low-slope roofs. Stanley began working in the roofing industry at the age of 14 alongside his father and brothers and has accumulated more than two decades of experience in roofing manufacturing, product development, and industry leadership. Under his leadership, IB Roof Systems has expanded its manufacturing capabilities and distribution across North America while continuing to advance PVC roofing technology and integrated roofing system solutions. The company’s headquarters relocated to Texas in 2010 when Stanley was named CEO, and IB Roof Systems later joined the Kingspan Group to further expand global building envelope innovation. Stanley is active in the roofing industry and has served on the National Roofing Contractors Association (NRCA) Board of Directors. He maintains active memberships with SPRI, IIBEC, the Roofing Alliance, Western States Roofing Contractors Association, and the Florida Roofing and Sheet Metal Association. MOD BIT HISTORY AND USE

SPEAKER: Bruce Hall

This program introduces modified bitumen roofing systems, covering the material’s historical origins, evolution, and modern applications. Participants will gain a basic understanding of how bitumen is modified into high-performance roofing products, including membranes, mastics, and emulsions. The course also highlights common challenges in today’s systems—such as cracking, granule loss, and lap failure—equipping attendees to better assess and address potential performance issues.

Objective 1: Modified bitumen roof background - gain a basic concept of the natural state of bituminous material related to roofing history.

Objective 2: Modified bitumen roof systems in their earliest formation and design up to the modern era.

Objective 3: Modified bitumen roof process - understanding the general building blocks of how bitumen is modified from the original product and transformed into usable basic materials and high-performance modern roof membranes, mastics and emulsions.

Objective 4: Modern modified bitumen roof system challenges in the 21^st century – increased awareness of modified bitumen roof system issues that can lead to premature failure (cracking, granule loss and lap failure).

SPEAKER BIO: Dr. Hall is a building enclosure consultant with over 39 years of experience in roofing, waterproofing, and façade systems. He has consulted on high-profile projects including The Star at Frisco, The Alamo, Texas Governor’s Mansion, Houston Astrodome, MD Anderson facilities, DFW Airport, and Microsoft data centers.

He is a recognized expert in building enclosure forensics and serves as an expert witness on complex cladding and moisture intrusion cases nationwide. Dr. Hall holds the Registered Building Enclosure Consultant (RBEC) designation through the International Institute of Building Enclosure Consultants (IIBEC), a distinction held by a limited number of professionals globally. Incomplete teams or individuals are welcome and will be grouped to make 4 person teams, if possible.
Mulligan's are limited to 2 per person and cost is 2 for $25. Mulligan's can be bought on the day of the tournament, or can be included in team's registration fee.
